The Third Maine was formed in Augusta in June of 1861 and served throughout the war in the Eastern theater with the Army of the Potomac. Saw action at First Manassas, The Peninsula Campaign, Williamsburg, Seven Pines, the Battle of the Seven Days, Second Manassas, Fredricksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Battle of The Wilderness, Spotsylvania and Cold Harbor. the unit mustered out on June 28, 1864 and reformed inside the Seventeenth Maine.
